Tangerine Dream-Ricochet (1975)
"Ricochet" was the first live album by the German band Tangerine Dream, the first in a long series of live albums that would follow, and the group's sixth release overall. Considered one of their most accessible works, the trio, comprised of their most iconic lineup Edgar Froese (electric guitars, synthesizers, bass), Christopher Frank (keyboards), and Peter Baumann (keyboards and percussion) presented several suites taken from their tour promoting the album "Rubycon". However, none of the included tracks belong to that album, nor to any other previously released album. Instead, two new compositions appear, titled "Ricochet Part 1 and 2". The first part is steeped in spacey, psychedelic sounds with evocative Eastern passages, where the guitar and drums weave hypnotic, meditative passages adorned with enveloping synthesizer sounds. The second part, in contrast, is a less structured piece, moving towards instrumental improvisations by the trio. The initial piano and flute melody, followed by synthesizers with darker, atmospheric sounds, transforms it into a magical and ethereal suite. With this recording, Tangerine Dream evolved to a higher level of experimentation and explored new musical sensations, without succumbing to the indulgence often found in this type of work.
