FM is the soundtrack of the movie of the same title that was released in April 1978 and in the rest of the world in November.
With the advertising slogan "No Static At All" this movie narrates the adventures of a fictitious radio station "Q-Sky, which had managed to become the number one station in the North American West area due mainly to its musical repertoire.
But that popularity would lead to the confrontations of the disc-jockey in charge of the station Jeff Dungan and the investor bosses, who pressured him to emit much more publicity and less music.
The soundtrack is a kind of great compilation of the great hits of American music of the time, an impressive cast of artists and their songs, which has become one of the best compilation ever made and a cult album.
With a star-studded roster featuring Tom Petty, Steely Dan, Boston, Foreigner, The Eagles, Bob Seger, James Taylor, The Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Miller, Joe Walsh, Billy Joel, Queen, Jimmy Buffett, Dan Fogelberg or Randy Meisner among others, soon reached the million record sold.
All the songs included here are classics of rock, country or folk-rock, and practically all were top ten on the hit charts at the time of publication.
In 1979 the album would win the Grammy Award for best recording production and engineering, awarded to producer Roger Nichols, who until then was the one who regularly produced Steely Dan albums.
