Released in 1972, the debut album by the German band Neu! is a pinnacle of krautrock, an album that took progressive and space rock to another level and its highest expression. Neu! consisted of Klaus Dinger (percussion, keyboards, guitars, and vocals) and Michael Rother (guitars and bass), two musicians who pioneered the creation of evocative sounds that conjured vast, hypnotic soundscapes. In their brief existence (1971–1975), they released four magnificent albums that decisively influenced many artists, including David Bowie, Brian Eno, and Radiohead. In this debut, the duo created some of krautrock's immortal melodies, such as the motorik anthem "Hallogallo", a memorable ten minutes of endless, relentless rhythms, and the dreamy "Weissensee" with its bluesy aura. The rest of the repertoire is equally impressive, including the experimental "Im Glück", the intense "Negativland", and the emotive and terrifying "Lieber Honig". Without a doubt, in this first release, Neu! gave us one of krautrock's emblematic works and a true challenge to avant-garde music itself.
