With a musical style dominated by psychedelia, elements of Eastern music, lysergic guitar work, and unsettling, disturbing vocals, the German band Mythos stands as one of the groups that best captured the essence of Krautrock. Formed in the late 1960s, their appearance at the renowned Langelsheim festival in 1971 led to a contract with the prestigious record label Ohr, through which they released their debut album the following year. On this first record, the group, comprising Stephan Kaske (who handled guitar, keyboards, and vocals, among other instruments), bassist Harald Weisse, and drummer Thomas Hildebrand, presented a collection of original ideas, manifested as an eclectic form of progressive rock infused with folk, psychedelic, and heavy rock influences. Tracks such as "Oriental Journey", a dark piece filled with haunting vocals that drifts between space rock and ethnic sounds, the powerful "Hero's Death", and the 17-minute epic "Encyclopedia Terrae", a sprawling composition containing all the hallmarks of their unique style, collectively define a masterful work, widely regarded as one of the great achievements of German Krautrock.

Neu!-Neu! (1972)
Released in 1972, the debut album by the German band Neu! is a pinnacle of krautrock, an album that took progressive and space rock to another level and its highest expression. Neu! consisted of Klaus Dinger (percussion, keyboards, guitars, and vocals) and Michael Rother (guitars and bass), two musicians who pioneered the creation of evocative sounds that conjured vast, hypnotic soundscapes. In their brief existence (1971–1975), they released four magnificent albums that decisively influenced many artists, including David Bowie, Brian Eno, and Radiohead. In this debut, the duo created some of krautrock's immortal melodies, such as the motorik anthem "Hallogallo", a memorable ten minutes of endless, relentless rhythms, and the dreamy "Weissensee" with its bluesy aura. The rest of the repertoire is equally impressive, including the experimental "Im Glück", the intense "Negativland", and the emotive and terrifying "Lieber Honig". Without a doubt, in this first release, Neu! gave us one of krautrock's emblematic works and a true challenge to avant-garde music itself.

Depeche Mode-Songs Of Faith And Devotion (1993)
Throughout much of their career, the British group Depeche Mode evolved from their initial synth-pop style toward more eclectic genres, such as pop-rock. Masters at crafting instant hits unpretentious songs aimed at a mass audience, they always distinguished themselves by having accomplished songwriters in their ranks (Vince Clarke and Martin Gore), experts at devising tracks with addictive sounds and choruses that easily hooked the average listener. Twelve years after releasing their debut, the brilliant "Speak & Spell", an album featuring synth-pop anthems like "I Just Can't Get Enough" and "New Life", they launched their eighth record, "Songs of Faith and Devotion". On this album, the quartet comprising Martin Gore, David Gahan, Alan Wilder, and Andrew Fletcher gave greater prominence to energetic guitars and elements such as gospel vocals and bluesy influences, without abandoning the synthesizers and danceable rhythms that underpinned lead singer David Gahan's baritone voice. Despite this subtle shift in direction, the band won the approval of their most devoted fans and achieved a dozen platinum and gold records worldwide.

Cinderella-Night Songs (1986)
Cinderella are one of the leading bands of glam metal, or hair metal, which became so popular in the 1980s. Like so many other bands of that decade, Cinderella gained considerable notoriety thanks to their clever MTV videos, but their true potential lay in their appealing heavy metal with influences from hard rock and blues rock. Formed in 1983 by guitarist Tom Keifer and bassist Eric Brittingham, they were fortunate enough to be discovered by Bon Jovi, who by that time was already emerging as one of the most successful American rock groups. Under his mentorship, the band released their debut album, "Night Songs", in 1986, which achieved overwhelming success thanks to songs like the excellent mid-tempo "Nobody's Fool", the monumental hard rock "Hell on Wheels", the gritty "Nuthin' for Nuthin' ", and the catchy "Shake Me". From here on, Cinderella steered her style towards a bluesier direction with her next and successful album, "Long Cold Winter".

Johnny Hammond Smith-Gears (1975)
Nicknamed "Hammond" for his immense talent on the Hammond B-3 organ, Johnny Hammond Smith was a renowned jazz, soul, funk, and R&B musician who launched his career during the vibrant hard bop era of the late 1950s. By the mid-1970s, and after releasing some thirty albums, Smith issued another of his landmark works, "Gears". For this project, the keyboardist collaborated with a large group of musicians who frequently worked as session players for the Blue Note label, including Larry and Fonce Mizell, Kenneth Nash, Harvey Mason, Craig McMullen, John Rowin, Hadley Caliman, and Michael White, among others. Recorded during a period when his style was shifting toward funk, reflecting his adaptation to the changing musical landscape of jazz and the broader industry, Smith went on to create several high-profile albums alongside the arranging team known as the Mizell Brothers. On albums such as "Gambler's Life" (1974) and "Gears", Smith began incorporating electric and acoustic pianos alongside his signature instrument. This album showcases an excellent funk and jazz repertoire, featuring standout tracks like "Tell Me What To Do", "Los Conquistadores Chocolatés", "Lost On 23rd Street", "Fantasy", and "Can't We Smile".

Joe Satriani-Not Of This Earth (1986)
"Not Of This Earth" is the debut album by guitarist Joe Satriani, aptly dubbed one of the greatest guitar heroes of the late 20th century. In his early years, Satriani combined teaching guitar with performing as a professional musician. Great guitarists like Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, and Alex Skolnick were among his students, many of whom went on to achieve fame. Although always associated with heavy metal and classic hard rock, Satriani has experimented with other styles such as jazz rock, blues, and progressive rock. On "Not Of This Earth", the New York native showcases his stylistic diversity with a work brimming with ethereal atmospheres, serpentine rhythms, and a devastating rhythm section with a clear funk undercurrent. This atmospheric funk rock is present in tracks like "The Snake", while the captivating "Hordes Of Locutus" displays his hard rock prowess. Other tracks like the relaxed "Rubina" and "New Day" also showcase Satriani's remarkable sensitivity on the six strings. The rest of the album maintains a high level of technical and virtuosic instrumental skill; songs like the rocking "The Enigmatic" and the virtuosic "The Headless Horseman" ultimately create an essential and highly recommended work for electric guitar enthusiasts.

Yezda Urfa-Boris (1975)
Yezda Urfa was a short-lived American band that left behind one of the finest works of progressive rock to emerge from the United States. Formed in 1973, their evocative style aligned them with the baroque sounds of English progressive rock bands like Genesis, Yes, and Gentle Giant. Their debut was actually a self-financed demo released in 1975, which, despite its undeniable creative quality, went largely unnoticed until years later when it was reissued on CD by several American and Japanese labels. In this demo, the group, composed of Rick Rodenbaugh (vocals), Mark Tippins (guitars), Phil Kimbrough (keyboards and wind instruments), Marc Miller (bass), and Brad Christoff (drums), recorded a true masterpiece of avant-garde American rock, showcasing dizzying rhythms, large doses of instrumental virtuosity, and musical ideas that perfectly rivaled any leading British progressive rock band of the 1970s. Combining Genesis-like melody with the dissonance of jazz rock, folk rock, and music hall, the quintet excels in tracks such as the avant-garde "3, Almost 4,6 Yea", the powerful "Three Tons Of Fresh Thyroid Glands", the tour de force "Boris", and the complex and vibrant "Tuta in the Moya and Tyreczimmage".

The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Are You Experienced (1967)
This is undoubtedly the album that would shatter the foundations of easy-listening pop-rock in the late sixties. The Jimi Hendrix Experience's debut album established the electric guitar's importance as a leading instrument in the world of rock. While it's true that Hendrix drew inspiration from blues greats like Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and T-Bone Walker, he combined traditional blues with elements of psychedelia and avant-garde music, revolutionizing the role of the guitar in hard rock, heavy metal, funk rock, jazz rock, and any other genre that would emerge. Surrounded by two phenomenal musicians, jazz drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Reading, Jimi Hendrix created a spectacular album brimming with exciting and powerful sounds unlike anything heard before. Songs like the jazzy "Third Stone From The Sun", the pulsating funk rock "Foxy Lady", the heavy hard rock "Manic Depression", the blues "Red House" and "The Wind Cries Mary", the overflowing "Purple Haze" or the atmospheric "May This Be Love", make this album a fundamental piece in the history of contemporary music in general and rock in particular.

Lou Reed-New York (1989)
In 1989, with his fifteenth album, Lou Reed returned to his rawest, most streetwise side, recounting stories of the New York underbelly through his stark rock and his monotonous, soulless voice. Accompanied by Mike Rathke (guitar), Rob Wasserman (bass), and Fred Maher (drums), Reed delves into various pressing issues such as youth unemployment, the underprivileged, drug addiction, and sexual abuse. On "New York", Lou Reed becomes a chronicler, dissecting, song by song, the despair and realities of the most vulnerable and ignored members of society in a kind of spontaneous autobiography. Songs like "Halloween Parade", "Endless Cycle", "Busload of Faith", and "Stick of You" demonstrated that his creativity and imagination knew no bounds, resulting in one of his most monumental and essential works.
