Billy Swan became world-famous for just one song, "I Can Help", becoming what is known as a "one-hit wonder". However, Swan's career extended far beyond this single hit. Born in Missouri in 1942, he began his career as a country music songwriter in the early 1960s, achieving his first success with his song "Lover Please", sung by Clyde McPhatter. By the mid-1960s, Swan had settled in Nashville, writing numerous country songs for other artists, some of them very successful, and producing records for musicians like Tony Joe White on "Polk Salad Annie". In addition to all this, Swan often played in Kris Kristofferson's band before releasing his first solo album in 1974. This debut album, besides the hit "I Can Help", featured other brilliant tracks such as "Lover Please" and "The Ways of a Woman in Love". Swan's style combined elements of blues, country, rock, and rockabilly, all underpinned by a soulful, melancholic voice. "I Can Help" reached number 1 on the US Hot Country Singles chart and charts worldwide. However, it would be Billy Swan's only solo hit. Shortly after, he joined the Black Tie, and in the following years, he continued to write other important hits for various artists, becoming a renowned songwriter, producer, and session musician in various Nashville studios.
