Steve Harley was an extraordinary songwriter, more than just a rock star; he was a poet who crafted striking musical imagery with fiery lyrics. He fronted one of the most captivating bands in rock music, Cockney Rebel, a group that, in addition to Harley, included Milton Reame-James on keyboards, Paul Avron on bass, Paul Cocker on guitar, and Stuart Elliott on drums. Their contract with EMI in the mid-70s opened the door to the rock world with their exceptional debut album, "The Human Menagerie", in 1974. Their style, a blend of glam rock, pop, and classic rock, was infused with melancholic sounds and theatrical musical symphony, effectively complementing Harley's expressive gestures and haunting vocals. Those were the band's most glorious years, releasing works such as "The Psychomodo", "Timeless Flight", and "Love's a Prima Donna", the latter another of the great albums that led Cockney Rebel to embark on a triumphant tour throughout Great Britain. Superbly written, performed, and produced, with each song flowing seamlessly into the next, it possesses a fervor and sense of humor never equaled in the career of this formidable British group.
